The Sun and The Air

Some niche Rocket League skills I've cultivated

I passed 2600 hours in Rocket League this week, and in those 100+ days of play I've developed a definitely-bad-but-fun playstyle. In doing so, I've become fairly proficient in some fairly niche stuff.

Pinches

Pinches are pretty commonly seen in high-level play - by hitting the side of the ball while it's against the wall, you can essentially squeeze it to the side at high speed. Kuxir developed their use in the pro game years ago, and they're still a great way to catch a sleeping defense.

I just like the way the ball goes zoom.

This particular example was clipped in an actual game, so I had multiple angles in the replay. The defender maaaaybe could have got a touch, but he was stretching and accidentally flipped away.

Stalls

I'm not actually good at stalls - freestylers use them constantly to perform truly disgusting stuff, but I mostly just use them to celebrate goals and game wins - occasionally to maintain height when doing ceiling nonsense. I've yet to hit a good shot with one, but I did record this one with (bad) handcam to try and show the inputs during a situation I'd actually use it - getting distance from the ball on a wall-to-air for a better shooting/double angle.

The button inputs (jump and air-roll) need to be hit at the same time - I think frame perfectly - while holding the opposite stick direction to the air roll - I do stick-right air-roll-left. It's quite a jabby motion.

Onehanders

So I don't play with default controls - I use the old defaults with boost on L1 and air-roll-left on R1. This means I can boost, brake, and steer all with my left hand.

At some point a few years ago, I realised that meant I could scratch my head while aerialing. I cultivated it.

A stupid skill, because it limits how many spinnies I can throw in.
